This 1.19 carat oval-cut ruby is a product of Mong Hsu, Myanmar – the Burmese locality that entered the market in the early 1990s and has since become renowned for yielding the deepest, most saturated reds once properly heat-treated. The color is a vivid, pure red with genuine depth and no unwanted brown or purple cast, the hue the trade calls "pigeon's blood," ruby's single most coveted color grade. The mixed cut, with a brilliant crown over a step-cut pavilion, is well executed and returns strong, even color across the oval face. Clarity shows visible inclusions on closer inspection, consistent with natural Burmese material of this size and color saturation – a fair trade-off the trade readily accepts for a stone that delivers this level of color and weight. In hand it's genuinely lively, throwing bright red flashes with movement.
