Demantoid

Gemologist’s Note
A Russian demantoid of 1.33 carats from the Poldnevskoye deposit, cut as an octagon — a step-cut style almost never applied to this material, where the round brilliant is the standard. The color is a vivid, saturated green, opening into striking flashes of gold and yellow across the broad step facets as the stone catches light. The cut suits demantoid's high dispersion particularly well: rather than concentrating fire into small points, the open table and long facets let color and light move across the stone in wide, deliberate sweeps. Fine byssolite threads are visible within, confirming Uralian origin. A demantoid of real size, cut in a style that shows off its color and fire in an entirely different register than the traditional round.
